HAWTHORN, Pa. (EYT) — Heavy thunderstorms dumped up to two and a half inches of rain in Clarion and Jefferson counties on Friday, triggering flash floods that submerged multiple roads, flooded basements, and damaged local property.
The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh issued a flood warning effective until 7:15 p.m. Friday for southeastern Clarion County, northeastern Armstrong County, and west central Jefferson County. Radar estimates indicated between 1 and 2.5 inches of rain fell during the storms, according to weather service meteorologists.
In Hawthorn, public reports confirmed floodwaters covered Main Street. “Multiple areas flooding again,” the Hawthorn Area Volunteer Fire Department stated in a social media post. The department reported that crews were pumping basements and managing road closures while the American Red Cross traveled to the station with cleaning supplies.
According to local emergency reports, firefighters responded to flooded conditions on Settlers Road near Summerville. Public reports to the weather service also showed Glade Run overflowed its banks, sending water onto Frogtown Road and Olean Trail south of Strattanville.
The New Bethlehem Fire Company activated its high water alarm at 11:43 a.m. Scanner reports indicated heavy flooding near Pine Run Road and Shannondale Road near Mayport, where water caused damage to Kemmer’s Greenhouse and forced authorities to close several roadways.
According to a hazardous weather outlook from the National Weather Service, scattered showers and thunderstorms remain possible through Friday afternoon and night across western Pennsylvania. Meteorologists stated these storms could produce strong wind gusts and heavy downpours leading to isolated flash flooding.
Weather service forecasters noted thunderstorm chances will continue through Saturday, returning Monday through mid-week. According to the outlook, additional storms during those periods may bring gusty winds, heavy rainfall, and further flash flooding risks.
