BROCKWAY, Pa. (EYT) — Two Jefferson County women face misdemeanor retail theft charges after state police say they stole $224.28 in merchandise from a Snyder Township thrift store through a fake scanning scheme.
According to criminal complaints, the Pennsylvania State Police in DuBois charged 53-year-old Melissa Dawn Reitz, of Brockway, and 44-year-old Christie Ann Allshouse, of Brookville, each with one count of retail theft, a first-degree misdemeanor.
The incidents occurred on February 25, 2025, and March 10, 2025, at the Goodwill Industries located on Route 219 in Snyder Township, Jefferson County, according to the affidavit of probable cause.
Police say Allshouse was an employee at the store during the incidents.
According to the complaint, Allshouse operated the cash register and pretended to scan numerous items before placing them into large, clear garbage bags without actually scanning them.
The complaint states that Reitz distracted another employee by hugging them while Allshouse “fake-scanned” the items. Reitz then left the premises with the bags of merchandise, according to the complaint.
It is alleged that during one incident, the total should have been $119.97, but Reitz only paid $5.35. During the second incident, the total owed was $151.92, but Reitz only paid $42.26, according to police. The complaint notes the total loss to the store was $224.28.
According to police, security cameras captured the incidents.
Both women are scheduled for preliminary hearings on July 28 before Magisterial District Judge David B. Inzana, according to court dockets.
