HARRISBURG, Pa. (EYT) — The Pennsylvania State Police expanded its Rapid DNA initiative to municipal law enforcement agencies to provide faster access to forensic technology. This expansion allows local police to develop DNA profiles in 90 minutes for cases involving homicides, assaults, and burglaries.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police, the program processed over 354 samples since its start last year. State police records show the technology created 190 DNA profiles and led to 163 investigative matches.

Investigators use the system to find suspects during the early stages of a case. According to agency officials, the service also helps exclude people from investigative focus. The program supports existing laboratory services during situations where time is a factor.

“We are committed to delivering exemplary services to the criminal justice community and take pride in staying at the forefront of technological advancements,” said Major Colette M. Smith, Pennsylvania State Police, Director of Bureau of Forensic Services. “We look forward to supporting our law enforcement partners in advancing their investigations and enhancing their ability to protect and serve the citizens of the Commonwealth.”

Governor Josh Shapiro proposed a $16.2 million investment for the 2026-27 budget to support state police missions. According to the administration, these funds would pay for approximately 380 new troopers and four cadet classes.

Data from the administration indicates violent crime decreased 12 percent statewide. Fatal gun violence dropped 42 percent, according to state reports.

Local agencies that want to use the program should contact their regional state police forensic unit. The state police website provides additional information about the initiative.
