CURWENSVILLE — Gavin McDermott and Hunter Passmore combined on a 1-hitter and the Curwensville baseball team piled up 12 runs in the fourth inning on the way to a 14-0 shutout of Harmony Monday afternoon. The game lasted just five innings due to the 10-run rule.
McDermott retired the first six batters he faced before surrendering a pair of walks in the third, getting a double play from his defense to get out of the inning unscathed. Harmony’s Parker Maseto popped a single to center field with one out in the fourth to thwart McDermott’s no-hit bid. McDermott walked three and struck out six in his four innings of work.
The Golden Tide offense racked up 11 hits, walked six times and reached on four Owl errors. Most of the damage was done in the 12-run fourth when the Tide sent 17 batters to the plate. Six of the first seven Curwensville batters reached base in the frame despite the Tide not registering a hit.
Three walks and three Owl errors to start the fourth led to three runs and had the bases loaded for McDermott, who knocked in a run with a base hit to up the Curwensville advantage to 6-0.
A Peyton Perks sacrifice fly produced the fifth run of the frame, upping the lead to 7-0. Curwensville proceeded to pile up seven more runs with two outs.
Cayden Pierce had a run-scoring single, Cael Butler knocked in two with a double, Breck Finn added a two-run single and Lawson Neiswender plated one with a double. The Tide also scored a run on an error.
With the Tide leading 14-0, Passmore came on in relief of McDermott in the top of the fifth and struck out the side to preserve the shutout.
Curwensville took a 2-0 lead in the second thanks to an RBI double off the bat of Butler, and a Lincoln Hoyt run-scoring single.
Butler paced the Tide offense with two hits (both doubles), two runs scored and four RBIs. Neiswender also had two hits and scored twice.
Finn, Trenton Best, Pierce and Kyler Nelen all scored two runs for the Tide, who improved to 3-0 on the season.
