The Scenic Rivers YMCA is seeking a skilled and mission-driven Accounting Manager to join our leadership team.
This full-time, salaried position plays a critical role in ensuring the financial integrity, transparency, and sustainability of the Association while supporting the YMCA’s mission of youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
A Key Financial Leadership Role
Reporting directly to the CEO, the Accounting Manager serves as a key financial leader for the Scenic Rivers YMCA.
This role oversees all day-to-day accounting operations and supports an annual operating budget of approximately $4.7 million.
Working closely with the CEO, leadership team, and Board of Directors, the Accounting Manager provides accurate, timely, and reliable financial information to support informed decision-making across the organization.
The position is responsible for maintaining strong internal controls, ensuring audit readiness, and delivering board-ready financial reports that leadership can trust.
The ideal candidate brings deep accounting expertise, a strong understanding of nonprofit finance, and a collaborative, service-oriented approach.
Core Responsibilities
The Accounting Manager manages all accounting functions for the Association, including general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, payroll coordination, cash management, and grant tracking.
Key responsibilities include:
- Preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and supporting schedules
- Leading month-end close processes to ensure accuracy and timeliness
- Providing clear financial reports and variance analyses to the CEO, Board of Directors, and leadership team
- Partnering with department leaders to support budgeting, forecasting, and responsible expense management
- Monitoring expenses and identifying opportunities for cost-effectiveness and operational efficiency
Audit, Compliance, and Internal Controls
A significant component of the role involves audit and compliance leadership.
The Accounting Manager leads preparation for the annual independent audit, supports clean audit opinions, and ensures timely completion.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Assisting with the preparation and filing of IRS Form 990
- Designing, implementing, and monitoring strong internal controls across all branches
- Conducting internal audits and reviews, and recommending corrective actions
- Ensuring compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, grant requirements, and funder expectations
Grant and Fund Tracking
The Accounting Manager oversees grant tracking and financial reporting to ensure compliance with funder requirements.
This includes coordinating financial documentation for grants, contracts, and public funding sources, as well as maintaining accurate records for restricted and designated funds.
Systems and Process Improvement
To support long-term growth and efficiency, the Accounting Manager maintains and enhances accounting systems and processes.
Responsibilities include ensuring accurate reconciliations of bank and balance sheet accounts and collaborating with leadership to ensure systems support internal controls, reporting needs, and scalability.
Partnership and Team Support
This role serves as a financial partner to branch executives, directors, and program leaders.
The Accounting Manager translates financial data into clear, understandable insights for non-financial staff and provides dependable, in-house accounting support that strengthens operations across the Association.
Qualifications and Experience
Qualified candidates will bring both technical expertise and strong interpersonal skills.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field
- Minimum of five years of progressive accounting experience, including supervisory responsibility
- Strong nonprofit accounting experience preferred; YMCA or multi-site organization experience is a plus
- Demonstrated success with audits, Form 990 preparation, and internal controls
- Solid understanding of GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting standards
- Proficiency with accounting software, Microsoft 365, and advanced Excel skills
- CPA or CMA preferred but not required
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse groups and stakeholders
Within 30 days of hire, the selected candidate must complete required YMCA clearances, training, and CPR/AED certification.
