SYKESVILLE, Pa. (EYT) — A morning structure fire along South Park Street in Sykesville resulted in one fatality after a passerby discovered the blaze on February 9, authorities say.

Jefferson County Coroner Greg Furlong confirmed the death after emergency crews arrived at the scene early Monday morning. Officials are withholding the identity of the deceased until the victim’s family is notified.

The fire was reported at 7:23 a.m. by a witness who was passing by the scene, according to a Jefferson County 9-1-1 representative. Emergency crews battled the blaze in bitter conditions, with subzero temperatures and wind chills dipping as low as -16 degrees.

Multiple fire companies from Jefferson County responded, including the Sykesville Volunteer Fire Department, Reynoldsville Volunteer Fire Company, and Big Run Area Volunteer Fire Company. Assistance also arrived from Clearfield County via the DuBois City Fire Department and Brady Township Fire Rescue.

Ambulance services from Sykesville and Ameserv Ltd. DuSan were on site until emergency personnel cleared the area at 9:42 a.m. No other injuries have been reported at this time.

The Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal’s Unit is investigating the fire.
