SPRING MILLS — The Clearfield Bison wrestling team, down a starter, had a tall task in front of them as they headed to Spring Mills to face the undefeated Penns Valley Rams.

The match started at 107, and the Rams proved they are strongest in the lightweights as they raced out to a 34-0 lead one match past the halfway point.  The Bisons did outscore their hosts 23-4 the rest of the way, but it wasn’t enough as Penns Valley remained undefeated at 11-0, while the Bisons dropped to 14-5 on the season.

There was really only one close score through the first six bouts and that was at 127 where Clearfield’s Bo Aveni (23-6) put a scare to Max Dinges (28-2), a third place finisher at the state championships last year. Dinges built up an 8-2 lead after the first period and a 12-2 lead after two periods. Aveni escaped to 12-3 and then hit a seven-point headlock, only to fall short 12-10.

The Bisons finally got on the board at 152 when Cash Diehl (23-6) beat Sawyer Fetterolf (20-11) by a 9-4 score to make it 34-3.

Colton Bumbarger (19-8) then only needed 45 seconds to pin Seth Fetterolf (5-11) at 160 to make it 34-9.

After a loss at 172, the Bisons swept the final three weights to set the final.

at 189, Brayden Wills (19-9) was very impressive against Penns Valley’s Cael Smith (13-3), building up an 11-2 lead before Smith was injured and had to injury default at the 1:02 mark of the first period.

Ryan Ludwig, pictured above, (18-11) was in a scoreless match after one period, and then was down 1-0 after two periods to Robert Martin (22-11), but Ludwig poured it on the final two minutes by escaping to tie it, then getting a take down and four nearfall points to go on to an 8-2 win.

And at 285, Matthew Peace (16-11) dominated Luke Tannis (2-13) to the tune of a 15-0 tech fall in 3:14.

The Bison are now off until the weekend when they head to the 27-team Thomas Automotive Tournament in Bedford.
