SUMMERVILLE, Pa. (EYT) – The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has issued a public warning regarding the dangers of cold exposure following a recent investigation into a fatality related to hypothermia.

To protect the privacy of the individual and their family, officials stated that no identifying information regarding the deceased will be released. Jefferson County Chief Deputy Coroner Jason Stiver described the incident as a heartbreaking loss for the community.

“Any death is tragic, but cases involving exposure to the cold are especially difficult, because they are often preventable,” Stiver said. “Our thoughts are with the loved ones affected.”

The Coroner’s Office warns that hypothermia can occur even in temperatures above freezing, placing elderly and medically vulnerable individuals at higher risk. Stiver urged the public to dress in layers, ensure homes are properly heated, and frequently check on elderly relatives and neighbors living alone.

“As winter and cold temperatures continue, we ask residents to look out for one another,” Stiver added. “A simple check-in can save a life.”
