Bison Drop Double-Header on Hardwood Against Forest Hills

SIDMAN — After missing out on an opportunity to play a double-header on their home court earlier this year, Clearfield got the chance to hit the hardwood twice in one night on Friday. It meant both basketball teams hit the road for a long drive out to Sidman for a battle against Forest Hills.

At night’s end, both went home wanting to regroup, dropping both contests.

It was ladies first, as the Lady Bison were back on the court for their first road game in two weeks, and were coming off a dominant win two nights earlier. This game did not go their way, as what started as a rough opening quarter finished on a sad note, as the Lady Bison looked up at a 77-42 final that went the wrong way after a four-game winning streak.

Early on, it was clear that the Lady Rangers were in control, penetrating the defense and getting out to a quick lead. The 20-12 lead after one quarter almost told the entire story, but Clearfield was not going down easy.

Fresh off hitting the 1000-point mark on Wednesday, Sonny Diehl was once again finding open looks to try and bring her squad back. She would lead Clearfield with 16 points, and helped her teammates pull a bit closer, but at the end of the first half, Forest Hills pulled ahead by another two points, carrying a 36-26 advantage into the locker room.

The third quarter, ultimately spelled doom for the girls, as defensively, they were playing tight defense, and head coach Missy Helsel noted that her daughter, Eve, was face-guarding most of the night, ultimately getting into a tight spot with fouls. By contrast, Forest Hills was finding a way to force turnovers, and on offense were getting strong looks. In the third quarter, they more than quadrupled what the Lady Bison put up, and went into the final quarter leading 58-31.

Mia Helsel would finish in double figures as well for Clearfield, scoring 14 points. The Lady Rangers would finish the night with five players in double digits, led by Aviah Maul with 22 points, followed with Morgan Gdula who netted 17.

After a brief break to get the floor cleaned up and the scoreboard ready, the boys took to the court, as the Bison were ready to take their undefeated record up against the Rangers, a team on a five-game win streak with two losses on their record. The Laurel Highlands crossover contest looked like one that could be a close one for 32 minutes.

What happened, by contrast, was one team controlling the night, and for those that made the trip from the area to see the Bison compete, saw them doing something they were not accustomed to. Clearfield was fighting from behind all night, and at the end would see their undefeated record come to an end, falling by a 72-44 final.

Both teams battled tight in the opening quarter, but the Rangers began pulling away as the first eight minutes ticked away. After one quarter, it was nearly identical to the girls, as Forest Hills held a 22-12 advantage.

It did get better for Clearfield in the second, but their two leading scorers all season, Evett Maines and Braison Patrick, were held in check for a majority of the night. Combined, the two accounted for just 14 points.

Forest Hills took a 42-29 advantage into halftime, but really turned up the defense in the second half.

The Rangers stifled Clearfield in all aspects, limiting them to only 15 points in the final two quarters, while putting up 17 in the third quarter alone. Dylan Stohon would finish with a game-high 22 points for Forest Hills, while teammates Koy McGough and Brandon Gregovich each added in another 17 points. For Clearfield, Elijah Glunt led in scoring with 16 points, including Clearfield’s only free throws, as he finished 4-for-4. Parker Collins would lead on the boards with 10 rebounds.

Both Clearfield squads get a bit of rest before they are back in action next week. The girls (9-3) will be on the road Monday night against Bishop Guilfoyle. The boys (12-1) will also face the Marauders, but they will be on the court on Wednesday, January 21, and will do so for the first time in 2026 inside the Bison Gymnasium. Both games will feature a junior varsity contest beginning at 6 p.m. Varsity action will follow.
