JEFFERSON COUNTY, Pa. (EYT) — Greg Furlong officially began his term as Jefferson County Coroner following a pair of swearing-in ceremonies held in late December and early January at the Jefferson County Courthouse, marking the start of a new administration that also includes a full slate of appointed deputies.
Furlong was sworn in on December 22, 2025, with Jeff Burkett, Jefferson County District Attorney, and Kayla Kromer, Jefferson County Prothonotary. The ceremony was held in the large courtroom and presided over by Judge John H. Foradora.
Because Furlong’s official commission did not begin until January, his appointed deputies were sworn in separately on January 5, 2026, during a second ceremony, also held in the large courtroom of the courthouse and again overseen by Judge Foradora.
Furlong’s administration includes Chief Deputy Coroner Jason Stiver, who previously served as a deputy under the county’s former coroner, providing continuity and institutional knowledge within the office. In addition to his investigative duties, Stiver has assumed responsibility for community outreach and education, a role aimed at increasing public understanding of the coroner’s office and its function within Jefferson County.
The newly sworn deputies include Alex Park, a funeral director and owner of Delley Funeral Home; Logan Fleeger, a funeral director with Furlong Funeral Home; and Devon Kuntz, a self-employed Brookville resident. Furlong said each deputy was selected based on their individual professional experience and skill set, noting that the group brings a balance of knowledge and professionalism to his staff.
“All these men are honored for the opportunity to serve Jefferson County,” Furlong said.
Furlong, Stiver, and Kuntz already hold the required state certification to serve in their roles. Park and Fleeger are scheduled to complete the required coursework and testing when the next certification class is offered in early March.
Furlong was elected coroner in the November 2025 municipal election, winning a contested race after defeating Democratic challenger James O’Bryon.
A longtime funeral director and business owner, Furlong brings nearly three decades of professional experience to the office. He has operated Furlong Funeral Home for almost 30 years and has been widely recognized for introducing forward-thinking improvements to death care services in Jefferson County. Those efforts include establishing the county’s first funeral home-owned crematory, adding on-site cold storage, and expanding funeral services into rural areas through the acquisition and preservation of existing funeral homes.
Furlong has also played a role at the state level, having served on the Pennsylvania State Board of Funeral Directors, where he helped guide licensing standards, professional ethics, and regulatory oversight. His career has additionally included community involvement through local organizations, youth programs, and veterans initiatives, including contributions supporting memorial efforts in the county.
With both swearing-in ceremonies complete, the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office is now fully staffed under Furlong’s leadership. The new administration enters its term with an emphasis on professionalism, training, transparency, and continued service to families across Jefferson County during some of their most difficult moments.
