CLARION, Pa. (EYT) — Seneca Rocks Audubon Society is inviting young artists from Clarion, Forest, and Jefferson counties to participate in the “Wild Birds of Pennsylvania: Through the Eyes of Youth” art competition.
The regional contest encourages children to explore Pennsylvania’s native bird species by creating original artwork while also incorporating research and learning. In addition to their artwork, participants are required to include five interesting facts about the bird they choose to depict.
The competition is open to children ages 4 to 18 who live in Clarion or Forest counties, or who are patrons of the Rebecca M. Arthurs Memorial Library in Brookville.
Entries will be judged in three age groups. The Elementary group is Pre-K through 3rd grade. The Intermediate group includes 4th through 6th grades. The Junior High/High School group is made up of 7th through 12th grades.
Young artists may use any medium — including painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, or mobiles — as long as the work is original and completed without adult assistance or kits.
Winners will first be selected from each age group at each of the eight participating libraries. Those winners will receive an age-appropriate bird field guide and advance to the grand prize round.
Three grand prize winners — one from each age category — will receive a pair of Vortex binoculars and two general admission tickets to the National Aviary in Pittsburgh.
The submission deadline is March 21, as the judging period will be from March 25 through March 31. Winners will be announced April 8.
Finalists’ artwork will be displayed throughout April at Michelle’s Café in Clarion.
Artwork must be submitted to a participant’s local community library. A completed Google Form — available through the Seneca Rocks Audubon Society website or at participating libraries — must be printed and attached to the back of the artwork.
Participating libraries include:
- Sarah Stewart Brevard Memorial (Tionesta)
- Marienville Public Library
- Clarion Free Library
- Foxburg Free Library
- Redbank Valley Library (New Bethlehem)
- Eccles-Lesher Memorial Library (Rimersburg)
- Knox Public Library
- Rebecca M. Arthurs Memorial Library (Brookville)
“This competition is all about celebrating imagination and expression while learning about the birds that share our home,” said Peggy Butler, an education committee member with the Seneca Rocks Audubon Society. “We want to see Pennsylvania’s wild birds through the unique perspective of our youth.”
