SOMERSET — It is hard to deny the success of the Clearfield Bison basketball team this season, with an undefeated record by double-digit margins every night. Hoping to keep that run going, it meant a long drive south, with a Laurel Highlands showdown against the Somerset Eagles.
If there was any worry about if that momentum, it was erased early on. After a close start, Clearfield pulled away in the second quarter to secure a 71-39 win over the Eagles to remain unblemished.
Both the Bison and Eagles kept it tight in the opening eight minutes, swapping baskets and the lead. After one quarter, Clearfield held a one-possession lead, ready for a close run in the next quarter.
That ensuing eight minutes went in favor of the visitors by a wide margin.
Senior Evett Maines would light up the scoreboard in the quarter. Of the team’s 22 points, he drained 13 of them. Maines would have a stellar night, scoring a team-high 33 points. Meanwhile, in that same quarter, the Bison defense locked down in a big way, as they forced errant shots, pulled down rebounds, and held the Eagles to a mere five points, taking a 20-point lead into halftime.
Clearfield’s Braison Patrick would add in another 20 points for the game. Tanner Kaskan led the team with seven rebounds, with Elijah Glunt close behind with six.
The big lead was more than enough to hold on in the second half, with Clearfield outscoring Somerset by a 32-21 margin in the final 16 minutes. Aiden Roby would lead the Eagles on the stat sheet with 11 points. The Bison did struggle at the free throw line, even in limited opportunities, finishing just 4-for-10 at the stripe.
With a 5-0 record, Clearfield returns home on Friday night as part of a basketball double-header, as Chestnut Ridge makes a long drive to compete in the Bison Gym. It’s a double-header as there will be no junior varsity contests, but instead the Lady Bison will start the night against the Lady Lions. The girls will tip at 6 p.m. The boys will take to the floor at approximately 7:30 p.m.
