SPRING MILLS — Coming into Monday night, the Clearfield Bison cagers were finding their identity early and often, as every game saw victory by a wide margin. Unselfish play and intelligent ball movement has proven to be the right formula, and now it was ready to be tested once more as the squad loaded up the bus, with snow falling on the ground. On the docket was a trip to Penns Valley for a showdown with the Rams.
That formula worked to start the year, and it continued on, as the Bison would herd the opposition into the corral to take a 61-45 victory.
Clearfield’s opening quarter was typical for this year’s team, coming out strong and quick. But, the Rams were not letting them get away so easily. Keeping it close, the Bison were only ahead by a possession entering the second quarter, 11-8.
It became a scoring frenzy in the second, as the teams combined for 34 total points. However, Clearfield held a slight advantage, taking a five-point lead into halftime.
The third quarter, however, belonged to Clearfield in all aspects.
Braison Patrick found his footing on offense, putting up nine of his game-high 26 points in the quarter. What made a big change was the team being able to rebound the ball and convert those rebounds into points. Tanner Kaskan made a statement on the night, pulling down 14 boards. Elijah Glunt was just behind, taking claim to 10 rebounds, while Patrick added in another eight.
Clearfield outscored the Rams, 17-7, in the third to take a commanding lead into the final eight minutes.
With the lead firmly in place, and the starters pushing it out even more in the fourth, head coach Nate Glunt allowed the main rotation to take a bow and let the younger players get in some experience under the main lights. Clearfield still won the quarter, 15-14, to keep its unbeaten season intact.
Clearfield (4-0) will be back on the court Wednesday night when they travel to Somerset. It is an earlier tip as there’s no junior varsity game slated, the two will tip off at 6:15 p.m.
