CLAYSBURG — The Curwensville girls wrestling team crowned three champions Saturday at the ICC/Heritage Tournament at Claysburg-Kimmel High School.

Freshmen McKenzie Astorino (100) and Brylee London (142) and sophomore Kendall Candelaria (148) each took first in their weight classes to help the Lady Tide to a third-place finish in the team standings behind Southern Huntingdon (143) and Northern Bedford (89), which squeaked past Curwensville by a point.

Allison Neeper (170) and Emily Neeper (235) were both runners up, Isabella Neff (136) was third and Andria Moore (118) and Kenlee Witherite (112) placed fourth for Curwensville.

“The girls wrestled very well, especially considering it was their first tournament of the season,” Lady Tide head coach Michael Astorino said. “We had four freshmen getting their first taste of varsity competition, with two bringing home first-place finishes.”

Overall, the nine Lady Tide who participated went 7-9 with seven pins.

Astorino pinned Southern Huntingdon’s Lilah Fleming in 60 seconds in the lone bout in the 100-pound weight class to earn her first-place finish.

London knocked off United’s Addison Hill in 39 seconds in the finals after securing a fall in 1:16 over Northern Bedford’s Ryann Welsh in the semis.

Candelaria pinned North Star’s Alyssa Kostyk in 1:48 in her finals bout.

Neff was 2-1 with two pins in her weight class.

The Lady Tide head to the Gettysburg Duals on Saturday, Dec. 13.

“There were a lot of positive moments, along with some areas we’ll continue to improve,” Astorino said. “We’re excited to get back in the room, make adjustments, and prepare for the Gettysburg Dual tournament on Saturday.  It will be a demanding day with six dual matches – more than many of our girls have ever competed in before.  We’ll lean on our veterans to help lead the way.  I am proud of this group and excited for what’s ahead.”

(1) Southern Huntingdon 143.0, (2) Northern Bedford 89.0, (3) Curwensville 88.0, (4) North Star 53.0, (5) Meyersdale 49.0, (6) United 40.0, (7) Glendale 9.0.
