STRATTANVILLE, Pa. (EYT) — Hannah Beggs and Julianna Schwabenbauer combined for 33 points with Beggs scoring 21 and Schwabenbauer adding 12 to help the Clarion-Limestone girls basketball team open the season with a 51-37 victory over Brookville on Tuesday.

Freshman Brooke Meals added six points while Kalyssa Ferguson and Corinne Hepfl each scored four.

Schwabenbauer, Beggs, Erika Meals, and Hepfl all pulled down six rebounds for C-L.

“You are always a little apprehensive going into the first game,” said C-L head coach Jared Beggs. “You know there are going to be some nerves and they are going to make mistakes, but overall, I felt the girls overcame those mistakes rather quickly. We always preach we want to be better in February than we are in December.”

C-L led 8-2 after one quarter with Beggs and Hepfl scoring four points each for the Lions.

The only two points for Brookville came on a pair of free throws from Ally Wilson as the Raiders couldn’t knock a shot down from the floor.

“I felt we gave a pretty good effort for our first game,” said Brookville head coach Mark Powell. “We only had one scrimmage, so we came in here with the mindset that this was our second scrimmage. We couldn’t get any shots to go early on, but we’re still working the bugs out and trying a few new things.”

C-L opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run for a 14-2 lead, forcing a Brookville timeout. The Raiders would make their first field goal at the 4:25 mark of the quarter. The Lions would hold a 15-8 scoring edge in the second quarter for a 23-10 halftime lead.

Four different girls scored the 15 points for C-L with Beggs notching seven to lead the way.

“We put in a different offense this season,” said Jared Beggs. “We just want them to read the defense and react. We know we have several girls who are capable of putting up double digit points on any given night.”

Brookville held a 16-14 scoring edge in the third quarter to cut the lead to 11 at 37-26 after three quarters.

C-L though would open the fourth on a 5-0 run to bump the lead back to 16 at 42-26. The Lady Raiders would trim the lead to 12 at 46-34 with 2:24 to play on a three-pointer by Emma Northey. However the Lady Raiders would get no closer as C-L would hold a 5-3 edge the rest of the way to set the final score.

Northey and Samantha Whitling each scored 10 points to lead Brookville with both hitting one three-pointer. Kaida Yoder added six points while Wilson chipped in with five.

“When those early scoring chances didn’t fall, we dug ourselves into a hole,” said Powell. “It’s hard to make a comeback when you fall behind on the road like we did tonight.”
