Dear Editor:
In 2021, Clearfield County entered into contracts with ICE and the GEO Group to facilitate the use of the Moshannon Valley Processing Center as detention space for ICE.
During the public deliberation, I expressed concerns about ICE and how they operated; however, I believed at that time that the benefits to our community (over 300 projected jobs, tax revenue) were enough for me to vote yes. I still believe our county residents working there are doing their best to provide a safe and secure setting.
Unfortunately, ICE is now using tactics that I consider brutal, immoral, and almost certainly illegal. The actions in Chicago in particular (including but not limited to a raid Sept. 30, which saw an apartment building invaded without warrants, the property of many innocent citizens destroyed, children and elderly people zip-tied, and American citizens detained) cannot be ignored. This is only one of many reports of unacceptable behavior by ICE that I have read.
I would also point out that ICE has been sending people to detention with no criminal record – and those improper detentions are costing American taxpayers millions of dollars.
Therefore, I am announcing that I no longer wish to see the county do business with ICE.
Barring major changes to both tactics and overall strategy, I will be voting no next year when the contract is up for renewal.
Sincerely,
Dave Glass
Clearfield County Commissioner
