PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. (EYT) – A Valier woman is facing charges for allegedly stalking and harassing her adult daughter over a period of several weeks, continuing a pattern of behavior that police say has spanned more than a decade.

According to a criminal complaint, Punxsutawney Borough Police filed charges against 55-year-old Charlene Lea Smilo, of Valier, after her daughter reported receiving approximately 193 unanswered text messages between August 21 and September 17. The victim provided a written statement indicating the messages ranged “from berating to threatening to accusing inappropriate and untrue behavior aimed at getting my attention and upsetting me” and that the harassment “had become too much.”

The complaint, filed by Patrolman Alex Hallowell, notes that he had previously instructed Smilo to have no contact with the victim and that she had been trespassed from the victim’s residence. Police have had “numerous calls” regarding Smilo attempting to contact the victim and her father, and other officers reported dealing with the “same issue” for “ten plus years.” The complaint also alleges that Smilo comes into Punxsutawney Borough and walks past her daughter’s house numerous times a day.

When Officer Hallowell informed Smilo of the pending charges, she allegedly stated that her daughter “needs to start listening to her.” The complaint states Smilo also said, “she is the child and (I am) the mother and she will listen to me,” and when told her daughter is an adult, Smilo allegedly replied, “No, she is a child,” before hanging up the phone.

Smilo was arraigned on September 22 on the following charges in front of Magisterial District Judge Jacqueline J. Mizerock:

  • Stalking — Repeatedly Comm. To Cause Fear, Misdemeanor 1
  • Harassment — Course of Conduct W/No Legitimate Purpose, Summary

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 22.
