DUBOIS- When disaster strikes, as it did recently with catastrophic flooding in Texas resulting in mass casualties and property loss, people from throughout the country respond.
The Monday Morning Quilters from Christ Lutheran Church in DuBois were among the responders to the Texas disaster. The quilters contributed 107 handmade quilts, along with assorted blankets, Bibles, and various other supplies to be sent to Texas. The quilts were blessed by Pastors John Miller and Amy Godshall-Miller during church services at Christ Lutheran on July 13.
North American Lutheran Church (NALC) coordinated the transport of the donations to Texas. A truck from Caldwell, Ohio, made stops at Christ Lutheran, First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Ridgway, and St. Thomas Lutheran Church, Hooversville, to collect donations. All of the contributions were taken to a NALC Disaster Warehouse in Caldwell, one of three NALC collection sites. Donations will be later transported to Peace Lutheran Church, Edmond, Oklahoma. From there they will be distributed to areas of need in Texas.
“The NALC Disaster Response is one of the finest ministries in our new denomination: coordinating the efforts of congregations across the country, allowing us to respond in a meaningful and substantial way to St. Paul’s call in Galatians 6. When he wrote. ‘Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ,’ helping those in need following a natural disaster is exactly what he was talking about,” said Pastor John Miller.
NALC, with a home office in Bedford, Texas, is a renewed Lutheran community moving forward in faith. NALC is focused on living out Christ’s Great Commission to go and make disciples in North America and around the globe.
The Monday Morning Quilters meet at Christ Lutheran each Monday from 9 a.m. tonoon. All are welcome to join. No previous skills are required and all supplies for making quilts are provided.
“If you can tie your shoes, you can assist in making the quilts,” said quilter Tina Nowak, while Brenda Amblod added, “Join our group to help those in need while having lots of fun and laughter.”
