CLEARFIELD– The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced the following schedule of maintenance activities in Clearfield County the week of July 21. PennDOT performs year-round maintenance in its mission to provide a safe, efficient transportation system, and the scope of work in Clearfield County for the coming week is as follows:

Base Repair:

  • Route 2018 (Copelin Road) between Route 2019 (Six Mile Road) and Irvin Drive/Dinky Road in Decatur Township. Monday, July 21 through Wednesday, July 23. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

Base repair is intended to repair fatigue cracked, potholed or distorted pavement sections and restore the structural integrity of the pavement. All distressed material within the area, including the material beneath the asphalt, is removed and replaced with sound material. The new material is then compacted before being overlayed with new asphalt. Base repair extends the service life of good and fair roads and provides a smooth, safe ride for motorists.

Crack Seal & Hot Pour Mastic

  • Route 3021 (Henry’s Road) between Route 53 in Irvona Borough and Route 729 in Jordan Township. Monday, July 21, and Tuesday, July 22. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
  • Route 729 between Route 53 in Glen Hope Borough and Route 3022 (Ansonville Road in Jordan Township. Tuesday, July 22, through Friday, July 25. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
  • Route 3020 (McCartney Road) between Route 729 and Route 2015 (Blue Spruce Road) in Jordan Township. Thursday, July 24, and Friday, July 25. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

Crack sealing and hot pour mastic operations prevent water intrusion from seeping through cracks or joints in an asphalt road, which can lead to potholes and pavement breakup. They are proactive preventive maintenance strategies to prevent water from entering the roadways and accelerating the formation of potholes and other failures.

Manual Patching

  • Route 1009 (Deer Creek Road) starting at Schoonover Road and continuing northbound for approximately a mile. Monday, July 21, and Tuesday, July 22. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
  • Route 219 between Shaffer Avenue in the City of DuBois and Route 4004 (Helvetia Road) in Brady Township. Monday, July 21, through Wednesday, July 23. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
  • Route 1012 (Shiloh Road) between Dale Road and Bear Hill Road in Bradford Township. Wednesday, July 23, through Friday, July 25. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
  • Route 322 between the Clearfield-Jefferson County line in Sandy Township and Route 219 in Brady Township. Thursday, July 24, and Friday, July 25. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
  • Route 2012 (Faunce Road) between Turkey Hill Road in Knox Township and Bucketline Road in Woodward Township. Thursday, July 24, and Friday, July 25. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
  • Route 2015 (Blue Spruce/Oak Ridge Road) between Route 53 in Bigler Township and Route 453 in Knox Township. Monday, July 21, through Friday, July 25. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
  • Route 3007 (Belsena to Erhard Road) between Fruit Hill Road in Knox Township and Route 453 in Bigler Township. Monday, July 21, through Friday, July 25. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

Most permanent pothole patching is completed in the spring/summer when temperatures stay consistently above freezing. If maintenance crews were not repairing potholes, the road surface would break up further and require more expensive corrective measures.

Pipe Replacing & Cleaning

  • Route 3030 (Windy Hill Road/Walnut Street) approximately half a mile east of Flemings Road in Pike Township. Monday, July 21. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
  • Route 255 starting approximately six-tenths of a mile north of Route 4015 (Flowing Well Road) in Sandy Township and continuing northbound to Winterburn Road in Huston Township. Monday, July 21, through Friday, July 25. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
  • Route 3014 (Black Elk Road) between Route 3003 (Punkin Ridge Road) and Roue 3005 (Irvona Road) in Chest Township. Monday, July 21, through Friday, July 25. PennDOT will implement a daytime only detour using Route 3005 (Irvona Road), Route 3022 (Berwinsdale Road), and Route 3003 (Punkin Ridge Road).

Pipe replacement and cleaning are essential in maintaining water flow around state roadways. Controlling water flow is one of the most important aspects of maintaining pavements. Uncontrolled water flow will damage both the pavement surface and the area under the pavement, which causes deterioration across the length of the pipe.

 Shoulder Maintenance

  • Route 3030 (Windy Hill Road) between Route 729 in Penn Township and Pine Street in Curwensville Borough. Tuesday, July 22, through Friday, July 25. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

Shoulder cutting removes excess material and debris from unpaved shoulder areas. Shoulder grading involves the shaping and stabilizing of those same areas. Both operations improve drainage, allow water to leave the roadway, and eliminate shoulder drop-offs. These are crucial highway maintenance operations because when drainage systems do not function properly, water collects on the road, weakens pavement, accelerates the formation of potholes, and creates the potential for icing conditions in the winter months.

 Side Dozing

Route 153 between Route 2011 (Atlantic to Henderson Road) in Woodward Township and Route 253 in Gulich Township. Monday, July 12, through Wednesday, July 23. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

  • Route 453 between (Oak Ridge Road) in Knox Township and Route 53 in Bigler Township. Wednesday, July 23, through Friday, July 25. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
  • Route 453 between Route 53 in Bigler Township and Route 253 in Ramey Borough. Wednesday, July 23, through Friday, July 25. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

Side dozing removes excess material from beneath guide rail areas, which improves drainage and allows water to sheet flow off the roadway. Side dozing is a crucial highway maintenance operation because when drainage systems do not function properly, water collects on the road, weakens pavement, accelerates the formation of potholes, and creates the potential for icing conditions in the winter months.

 Vegetation Management

  • Route 3005 (St. Lawrence Road) between the Clearfield-Cambria County line approximately 3.25 miles south of Irvona Borough in Beccaria Township and Route 3022 (Berwinsdale Road) in Jordan Township. Monday, July 21, through Friday, July 25. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

Mowing, herbicide spraying, and selected tree thinning help maintain a safe roadway free of obstructing vegetation, improving visibility to spot signage, traffic control devices, and other motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians, and animals approaching the road. Additionally, a well-maintained roadside can improve drainage and prolong the life of the roadway.

This schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions, emergencies, or other unforeseen interruptions.

Customers can report road concerns by calling 1-800-FIX-ROAD. If calling after hours, please leave a name and phone number.
