CLEARFIELD – Clearfield County District Attorney Ryan Sayers and the Pennsylvania State Police would like to remind citizens that con artists continue to conduct their illegal activities in our area. Scams can be easily committed on the unsuspecting person, and if not careful, anyone can become a victim.
One scheme that is becoming more popular involves a scammer calling the victim and speaking on behalf of a family member in legal trouble and in need of some fast cash. They will usually ask the victim to quickly wire them money for bail or to pay fines, or the scammer will arrange for a courier to pick up a package of money. The scammer will have already obtained information about the victim’s family member on social media websites to gain the victim’s trust.
Over the weekend, the Clearfield County District Attorney and the Pennsylvania State Police received a concerning report from a county resident who was targeted by a scam involving an individual impersonating a court related official.
On July 12, 2025, PSP Clearfield initiated an investigation into a scheme where the victims were contacted about a family member being involved in a crash and $10,000 was needed for bail. A Lyft driver was sent to the residence to pick up a package of cash. A second request was made for additional money as the alleged bail had been increased. A second courier arrived to pick up the additional package.
Through the investigation, it was determined the large sum of money was delivered to the eastern side of Pennsylvania. The scammer was located and arrested. This investigation involved members from the Pennsylvania State Police from Troop C, G, and H, in collaboration with Clearfield District Attorney Ryan Sayers.
“This is a reminder that scammers often use fear and urgency, usually relating to a close family member, to trick unsuspecting individuals into giving money or providing personal information,” said District Attorney Sayers. “Thank you to the many troopers, from across several Troops, whose efforts and hard work led to the successful outcome for not only the Commonwealth, but more importantly the victims.”
