Dutch Defeat Bison 6-2

HYDE — The Clearfield baseball team had its chances Wednesday against St. Marys, loading the bases three times against the Dutch but coming away with just two runs in a 6-2 loss at the Bison Sports Complex.

The Bison filled the sacks in the second, fourth and sixth innings and also had a runner thrown out at the plate in the first. Clearfield stranded 11 base runners in the game.

St. Marys took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI double off the bat of Ben Reynolds, who knocked in Jackson Vollmer, who led off the game with a base hit.

But after giving up two hits and issuing a walk in the first, Bison starting pitcher Connor Peacock settled in and enjoyed 1-2-3 innings in both the second and third frames.

Unfortunately for Peacock, the Bison offense was unable to produce.

Clearfield had its first opportunity in the bottom of the first when Kamden Kushner drew a 2-out walk and advanced to second when Colton Bumbarger reached on an error. But Kushner was thrown out at the plate, trying to score on Noah Wriglesworth’s single to end the inning.

The Bison loaded the bases with one out in the second after a single by Braison Patrick and walks issued to Matt Irvin and Peacock.

But a strikeout and flyout ended the Clearfield threat.

St. Marys upped its lead to 2-0 in the fourth on an RBI single from Mason Nicklas.

The Bison broke through in the fourth after once again loading the bases.

Patrick was hit by a pitch to start the inning before Irvin and Peacock drew 1-out walks. Patrick scored on an error but Dutch starter Ben Paul once again got out of the jam with little damage.

St. Marys tacked on two more runs in the fifth when Vollmer and Reynolds sandwiched a double and single, respectively, around a Bison error that allowed Beimel to reach base. Vollmer scored on the error and Beimel trotted home later in the inning on Paul’s sacrifice fly.

Clearfield loaded the bases once more in the sixth, this time off reliever Louie Nedzinski, who issued three free passes in the frame, including one to Obrian Owens that forced in Irvin, who drew his third walk of the game to start a 2-out rally. But Cameron Coudriet came on in relief and got the final out of the inning to strand three Bison and keep the Dutch lead at 4-2.

St. Marys scored a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh, and Coudriet closed it out for the Dutch in the bottom of the frame.

Patrick had two of the four Bison hits in the game. Peacock reached base three times, singling once and drawing two walks.

Peacock took the loss after tossing 5 1/3 innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits. He walked four batters and struck out one.

Clearfield slipped to 8-9 with the loss, while St. Marys evened its record at 8-8.

The Bison host Central Friday, May 9.
