Clearfield honored its five seniors before Friday's 10-0 victory over Bishop Carroll on Friday. From left, are Xavier Lutz, Christian Welker, Matt Irvin, Craig Mays and Kamden Kushner.

HYDE — The Clearfield baseball team sent 12 players to the plate in a decisive third inning, scoring eight runs in the frame and going on to enjoy a 10-0 shutout of visiting Bishop Carroll Friday at the Bison Sports Complex.

The Bison only needed one hit in the inning as four walks, a hit batter and four Bishop Carroll errors ignited the inning.

With Clearfield already leading 1-0, Kamden Kushner, one of five Bison seniors honored as part of Senior Day activities, walked to lead off the third.

Noah Wriglesworth was hit by a pitch and Obrian Owens followed with a walk to load the bases for Christian Welker, who also drew a base on balls, which forced home Kushner with the first run of the inning.

Clearfield’s Kamden Kushner slides safely into second base during the Bison’s 8-run, third inning Friday against Bishop Carroll. Kushner had a hit and three RBIs in Clearfield’s 10-0 win.

The first of four Husky errors allowed Colton Bumbarger to reach base with Wriglesworth scoring on the play.

Braison Patrick followed with a sacrifice fly to drive in Owens before a second Bishop Carroll error on a Matt Irvin ground ball allowed Welker to score.

Craig Mays smacked the inning’s only hit, a single, to reload the bases for Xavier Lutz, who drew a walk that forced in Bumbarger’s courtesy runner Jayce Brothers to up the Bison advantage to 6-0.

Kuhner’s second at bat of the inning resulted in him reaching on a fielder’s choice and Irvin scoring on the play. Mays’ courtesy runner Rex Butler also scored thanks to an infield error.

Yet another Bishop Carroll error allowed Wriglesworth to reach on his second at bat of the inning. Lutz scored on the play to make it 9-0 before a double play ended the frame.

Clearfield ended the game due to the 10-run rule in the bottom of the fifth when Kusher’s single chased home Irvin, who led off with a walk. Three Bishop Carroll pitcher issued a total of five walks in the game – four of them coming in the third.

Kushner led the Bison offense with three RBIs. Mays had two of the three Bison hits.

Mays also picked up the win on the mound, firing a 5-inning, 3-hitter. He struck out five batters and did not issue a walk.

Seniors Irvin, Kushner, Lutz, Mays and Welker combined to score seven of the 10 Bison runs and recorded seven RBIs.

The Bison improved to 7-8 with the win, while Bishop Carroll dropped to 2-14.

Clearfield visits Greater Johnstown Monday, May 5.
