CLEARFIELD- In a cozy corner of Shaw Public Library young readers sit cross-legged, books in hand, as gentle, wagging tails swish beside them. It’s not your typical story time — it’s Paws for Reading, a unique program where children boost their confidence by reading aloud to trained therapy dogs. With no judgment and lots of love, these furry listeners are helping kids turn the page on reading anxiety, one tail-wag at a time.
Established 7 years ago, Paws for Reading was created to improve reading skills by reading one-on-one to therapy dogs. This is done in a non-judgmental atmosphere where the child builds confidence.
On Thursday evenings, Ms. Ruth brings her two collies, Rose and Whisper, to the library. Kids who want to work on improving their reading skills can spend 20 minutes reading aloud to the two friendly therapy dogs.

The Shaw Public Library invites the public to join them Thursday, April 10th from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to learn about the program. Meet the current therapy dogs and say goodbye to the first therapy dog, Radar, who is retiring after 7 years of service.

A PAWS-itive Experience
“A few years ago my son had a bad experience with a dog that left him very unsettled around them. Paws for Reading was a great way to have some positive experience with dogs while also practicing his reading,” Explains Bonita Flood regarding her son, Jonathan. “He really enjoyed it and was much more inclined to read to one of the dogs than he was to read on his own at home. It gave him purpose in his reading.”
Bonita’s son, Jonathan, also had some praises to share about the program. “I like getting to be with the animals and be with what God created. I like how I get to read to the dogs and sometimes I get to make them do tricks!”
Laina Jackson takes her daughter, Mila, to the program as well. “Our daughter hasn’t quite found her niche when it comes to extracurricular activities, but reading to dogs is right up her alley and we have enjoyed it so much.” Laina explained.
