CLEARFIELD – A Brockport man will stand trial for aggravated assault by vehicle in connection with an accident June 30 in Girard Township.
Robert John Steele Sr., 42, was also charged with aggravated assault, accidents involving death or injury while not licensed, felonies, along with misdemeanor simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, and accident involving damage to attended vehicle and several summaries after he left the scene of the accident.
Steele waived his right to a preliminary hearing during centralized court Wednesday, sending the case on to the court of common pleas for further disposition. He is free on $50,000, unsecured bail.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, Steele was traveling south on the Shawville Frenchville highway, north of Deer Creek Road on his motorcycle when he failed to negotiate a curve, crossed the center line and struck another vehicle which was traveling north.
After crashing, Steele fled the area, instead of stopping to render aid. The victim suffered serious bodily injury and his left foot reportedly needed to be amputated due to his injuries.
Steele’s had a suspended driver’s license at the time of the accident.
During the investigation, Steele was considered a suspect. When he spoke with authorities, he admitted to causing the crash, it says in the criminal complaint.
