Sarah Jo Young (Holenchik) is announcing her candidacy for Mayor of Houtzdale. Sarah was born and raised in Houtzdale and graduated from Moshannon Valley in 1981.
Sarah acknowledges the drastic changes the community has faced over the years. “Our town has seen a lot of changes, good and bad,” she says, “From major fires and the loss of a few businesses along the way. It’s not the same town I grew up in.”
Sarah also recognizes the issues facing the Houtzdale community, citing poor infrastructure and blight-ridden properties: “We need infrastructure development. Sidewalks are in despair, and streets are full of potholes. We also need to address the blight issues in our community. People are not taking care of their properties, ultimately impacting the entire community. I will do whatever it takes to see Houtzdale succeed.”
Sarah studied at Penn State with a degree in Individual and family studies, while working full-time and raising two sons. Often recalling coming home from work before writing term papers in the middle of the night: “When I put my mind to something, I will see it through.”
Along with infrastructure and blight reduction, Sarah plans on making the mayor’s office more accessible to residents, “It’s important to me to get to know the community. I want them to know who their mayor is and what they can do with ideas and concerns,” she says.
Sarah will be cross-filing Democrat and Republican ballots and humbly asks for your support in the May primary.
