WESTOVER — Despite a defense designed to limit Curwensville’s Davis Fleming’s offense, the Golden Tide’s leading scorer netted 24 points, while Tuck Tkacik (17) and Chandler English (12) were also in double figures in a 60-45 victory over host Harmony on Friday night.
Fleming drilled a 3-pointer and went 3-of-3 from the line in the first quarter, while Tkacik had seven points in the frame to stake the Tide to a 16-11 lead after one. Fleming erupted for 11 of Curwensville’s 17 second-quarter points to help his team take a 33-20 advantage to the break.
Tkacik and English took over in the third with 10 combined points to increase the Tide lead to 48-31.
“Our boys played with a great deal of composure,” Golden Tide head coach Josh Tkacik said. “Harmony went with a diamond and 1 to isolate Davis and force other players to execute. Tuck played his role well. We felt we could take advantage of our physicality and strength to control the interior. If my math is correct, we scored on eight paint shots in the first half. eight in the third quarter and six in the fourth. Going 11-of-14 from the line is more our nature too.”
Harmony outscored the Tide 14-12 in the final stanza behind five points apiece from Parker Maseto and Kacey Brothers. Brady Hagens led the Owls with 15 points, seven of which came in the second quarter.
“Harmony played really hard and with their youth, they have a bright future given they continue to work at it,” coach Tkacik said. “You can feel their excitement when you enter the gym.
“It always feels good to leave a Mo Valley League opponent’s gym with a win,”
Curwensville improved to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in the MVL. Harmony dipped to 1-9 overall and 0-3 in league play.
The Golden Tide return to the hardwood Monday, January 13, hosting Williamsburg.
“We get to celebrate tonight, but then we must shift our minds to Monday’s game with Williamsburg,” coach Tkacik said. “We played them decently earlier in the year (a 59-49 loss) and it will be good to see how much each of us have grown since early December.”
