INDIANA — Curwensville 107-pounder Austin Gilliland was the lone Golden Tide wrestler to advance to the second day of the Mid-Winter Mayhem Classic at Indiana’s Kovalchick Center after going 3-1 on Friday.
The sixth-seeded Gilliland opened the tournament with a pin of Crestwood’s Dylan Bellas in 4:45 after building a 12-0 lead. He moved on to down Northern Lebanon’s Carter Wolford 5-0 in the Round of 32 before scoring a 9-3 decision over LaSalle College’s Cooper Helm, the 11th seed, in the Round of 16. Gilliland was pinned by third-seeded Javeon Chambers of Highlands in the quarterfinals, dropping the Tide senior into the consolation bracket.
Gilliland (12-2) now tangles with Emmaus’ Jackson Max in the sixth round of consolations. The winner advances to the consey quarterfinals and secures a Top 8 finish in the rugged tournament.
Curwensville 215-pounder Caleb Hendershot (11-4) had a solid showing as well. Hendershot lost his opener to Bishop McCort’s ninth-seeded Marquez Gordon by technical fall in 5:21. But he rebounded to win three straight bouts in the consolation bracket, two by technical fall and one via 2-1 decision before being eliminated from the tournament by Abington Heights’ Frank Scialpi, the 12th seed.
The Tide’s Reed Hawkins went 2-2 at 160 with a pin and a major decision, while 133-pounder Dylan Deluccia and 172-pounder Alex Murawski each went 1-2.

The Tide, who are in 52nd place out of 57 teams, combined to go 10-23 on the day.
Bishop McCort, which has eight semifinalists, is in first place with 178.5 points. Central Mountain is in second with 103.5 points, followed by Thomas Jefferson, which has four semifinalists and 93.5 points.
