INDIANA — The Clearfield Bison wrestling team went 25-19 on Day One of the 57-team Mid-Winter Mayhem Tournament being held at the Kovalchick Convention Complex on the campus of Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
That was good enough to place the Bison sixth in what will be an extremely tight race for sixth through 19th as only 10.5 points separate those 14 teams. It was a foregone conclusion that the top team in country from Bishop McCort was going to claim the title. They have not disappointed as they sent eight wrestlers into to Saturday morning’s semifinals and hold a 178.5 to 103.5 lead over runner-up Central Mountain.
Clearfield has one semifinalist in Brady Collins at 172 and have three others in the blood round, needing a win in their first bout Saturday morning in the consolation bracket to reach the podium. They are Cash Diehl at 139, Colton Bumbarger at 145, and Colton Ryan at 152.
Collins (16-0), the number two seed, had four technical falls on Friday to easily reach the semifinals. His opponent will be Abington Heights’ Brian Heard, the three seed. Heard is 29-2 on the season, owns 153 career wins versus Collins’ 135, and is a three time PIAA AAA state qualifier, placing fifth last year.
The trio of Bisons, all juniors, trying to become placewinners all had identical 4-1 records on the day, each winning their first two bouts, losing in the quarterfinals, then winning two more bouts.
Diehl (13-5), the 11 seed, picked up career win number 75. Bumbarger (15-7) is the 10 seed, while Ryan ((16-4) is the 9 seed.
Going 2-2 on the day for the Bison were Bo Aveni (11-8) at 114, Bryndin Chamberlain (11-8) at 127, and Nick Bailor (12-6).
Picking up solo wins and bowing out at 1-2 were Dakota Shugarts (9-8) at 121, Jackson Shugarts (2-6) at 133, and Ryan Ludwig (6-9) at 215.
Going 0-2 were Xavier Lutz (7-8) at 107 and Hunter Ressler (0-3) at 189.
Seniors Ty Aveni and Carter Freeland are sitting out the tourney due to injury.
