HOUTZDALE — After having Monday’s game postponed due to inclement weather, and extending the holiday break by a day, the Curwensville Lady Tide finally managed to return to the hardwood. The difficult part of the season for the lady cagers is that a majority of the month of January is spent away from their home court in Patton Hall. The Lady Tide began a four-game stretch on the road Thursday night, traveling to face the Lady Damsels of Moshannon Valley.
Early on, the two squads would battle tight, keeping things close in a low-scoring game. Moshannon Valley suddenly found itself in a strong spot in the second half, using a blast of scoring in the third quarter to put Curwensville down, eventually handing the Lady Tide a 45-33 loss.
The first quarter seemed to be a feeling out effort on both sides of the court, with a combined 13 points being scored in eight minutes of play. What was also noticed was the officials were watching carefully and were not letting many things get by them. Eight fouls were called in the first quarter, with 14 in total for the first half.
At the same time, both teams were keeping things close. Despite holding a three-point advantage after one quarter, Moshannon Valley saw its lead slip slightly in the second stanza. Curwensville won the second quarter, 10-9, but went into the locker room feeling good by being down just one possession, 17-15.
Once exiting the locker room, the Lady Damsels were no longer in distress.
Led by a nine-point effort from Lily Switala, who finished with a team-high 11 points, Moshannon Valley roared to life with a 20-point third quarter. Curwensville, by contrast, was limited to only eight points, putting the Lady Tide in a tough spot heading into the final quarter of play.
Karleigh Freyer, who led all scoring with 18 points, helped rally the team in the final quarter to play hard and tight, but it was not enough despite winning the final quarter, 10-8.
The next game for the Lady Tide (0-8) will be on Tuesday, January 14, when they travel to Williamsburg.
