ALTOONA — Clearfield was out two starters due to injury for the road dual meet at Altoona on Wednesday night, and the host Mountain Lions (6-2) took full advantage running their winning streak to six and handing the Bison their first loss of the season after four lopsided victories.
The 12 contested bouts went six each way, with the Bison forfeiting one match, as the Mountain Lions only trailed once on the night at 12-10 as Clearfield came back from 6-0 and 10-6 deficits before ultimately falling 31-29.
Back to back regular decisions at 189 and 215 over Hunter Ressler (3-3) and Ryan Ludwig (8-8) gave Altoona an early 6-0 lead.
Senior heavyweight Nick Bailor (11-4) turned a scoreless match in the second period into a fall in 2:21 to tie the match at six.
Dominic Nardozza (10-6) gave Altoona the lead back at 10-6 after his 15-1 major decision at 107 over Clearfield’s Xavier Lutz (7-6).
The Bison took what turned out to be their loan lead of the dual, 12-10, after the 114 pound match that saw freshman Bo Aveni (10-6) pick up a first period fall in 1:21.
Once again the Mountain Lions went back to back with wins, but a tech fall by two time state qualifier Braiden Weaver (16-5) at 121 and a fall by freshman Deklan Barr (16-4) at 127 gave the hosts a 21-12 lead that they would never relinquish.
Bryndin Chamberlain (9-6) brought the visitors back to 21-16 with a 13-4 major decision at 133 on the strength of three takedowns and a set of two nearfall points.
The Bison inched ever closer to 21-19 after Cash Diehl (9-4) picked up a 7-1 decision at 139 after scoring all seven of his points in the final period as his match was scoreless after two.
State qualifier Gavin Ciampoli (14-4) saw to it that Clearfield would not take the lead as his 8-0 major decision widened the Altoona lead to 25-19.
Once again the Bison creeped back to within two at 25-23 when Colton Ryan (12-3) had an 18-9 major decision at 152 with five takedowns, a reversal, and an escape, but had to fight off of his back when he gave up four nearfall points when he began the third period in the down position.
The Bison forfeit at 160 to 3-time state placewinner Luke Sipes (17-3) sealed the deal for the Mountain Lions before Beady Collins (12-0) kept his undefeated season intact with a 24 second fall at 172.
The Bison only have one day to bounce back from their first loss of the season as they will head to the 53-team Mid-Winter Mayhem tournament on Friday and Saturday on the campus of IUP.
