CURWENSVILLE — The Clearfield girls wrestling team had five of its nine entrants place in the Top 5 at Saturday’s Curwensville Wrestling Tournament, helping the Lady Bison to a third place finish in the team standings. The host Lady Tide ended up 11th out of 24 teams with two placewinners.
Clearfield’s Kendall Candalaria took second at 148 pounds, while Finley Gilbert (124), Makayla Taylor (155) and Aylee Johnston (190) each placed third. Alara Quickel was fifth at 190 pounds for the Lady Bison.
Curwensville’s Tessa Queen (champ at 142) and Emily Neeper (fifth at 190) were the Lady Tide’s placewinners.
Candalaria pinned her way to the finals, earning first-period falls over Curwensville’s Savannah Harley and Corry’s Ayvah Taylor. She faced defending PIAA 142-pound champion Violette Lasure (Chestnut Ridge) in the finals and was pinned in 17 seconds.
Gilbert, Taylor and Johnston each won their quarterfinals bouts, lost in the semis and then rebounded with consolation semi pins before winning their third-place bouts. All three girls were 3-1 with three pins. Taylor’s semifinal loss came to Northern Bedford’s Raegan Snider, who was third in the state at 155 last season. Snider topped Taylor 3-1 in their bout.
Quickel lost her opener by fall to Queen, won by 54-second fall in her first consey bout, dropped a 6-2 decision in her next outing to dip into the fifth-place match where she picked up a 3-0 sudden victory over Hickory’s Areia Cominsky.
After an opening bout pin of Quickel, Queen notched two more falls, decking Warren’s Emily Wiles in 50 seconds in the semis before dispatching of Reynolds’ Sophia Wise in 3:18 to win the crown. Queen trailed 13-2 after one period, but chose top to start the second and eventually turned Wise for the win.
Neeper was 2-2 with two pins, including a 59-second pin of Bald Eagle Area’s Shaylin Harter. on her way to a fifth-place medal.
The Lady Bison were 18-14 in the tournament with 17 pins. Curwensville went 11-18 with 10 pins.
Gabbie Duncan (118) and Angela Rougeaux (130) were each 2-2 with two pins for Clearfield. Jordin Peoples (118) and Taylor Shirey (170) were both 2-2 for the Lady Tide.
Corry won the team title with 147 points, just 10.5 more than runner-up Hickory. Clearfield had 106 points to take third. Both schools had two champions as did Chestnut Ridge.
Both teams are back in action Saturday, January 11 at the Mid-Winter Mayhem Tournament at IUP’s Kovalchick Center.
In the junior high tournament, Curwensville McKenzie Astorino won the 77-pound title and Brylee London took the 148-pound championship with 3-0 records, all three falls. Ali Dimmick was fourth at 96 pounds after going 2-2 with a pin.
Clearfield’s junior high team was second overall with eight placewinners in Piper Kaskan (2nd), Jocelyn Nixon (2nd) Ashley Rougeaux (third), Mya Ludwig (third), Lily McBride (third), Margaret Duke (4th), Alexa Knepp (4th) and Gabriella Hockenberry (5th).
