HARRISBURG – Sen. Wayne Langerholc Jr. (R-35), who chairs the Senate Transportation Committee, Wednesday announced two rail freight grants were awarded in his district:

  • Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad Inc. will receive $2.9 million to improve 28 miles of track in Clearfield and Elk counties, including track surfacing and installation of an equipment defect detector.
  • RJ Corman Railroad Company will receive $2.9 million to replace approximately 44,000 feet of rail in Cambria and Clearfield counties.

“The railroad industry reflects our rich heritage, inspiring economic development and supporting family-sustaining jobs,” said Langerholc.

“I’m honored that the commonwealth invested nearly $6 million for rail freight to operate more safely and efficiently in our communities.”

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Pennsylvania ranks first in the country in the number of operating railroads (65) and ranks near the top in total track mileage (more than 5,600 miles).

PennDOT manages the Rail Freight Assistance Program and Rail Technical Assistance Program, which invests in rail freight service across the commonwealth.

PennDOT is also inviting the public to provide online comments by Dec. 19 on the development of the 2025 State Rail Plan, including both freight and passenger rail.
