DUBOIS – In efforts to fight blight, the City of DuBois is mulling the potential demolition of two buildings.
On Monday night, council members voted to request quotes for the potential demolition of two city properties.
The first property is located at 115 ½ S. Highland St., which previously suffered a fire but was never “satisfactorily repaired.”
The second property is located at 113 S. Brady St., also known as the “Carpet Outlet” building, which survived the previous condemnation and demolition of a neighboring building.
It was noted that the owner of The Carpet Outlet building has already appealed the demolition order.
This appeal resulted in the city’s discovery that it had no members on its required “International Property Maintenance Code Appeals Board” that handles such matters.
According to Zoning and Code Enforcement Officer Zac Lawhead, the board hasn’t taken any action since the last appeal in 2011.
It was noted that the previous council neglected to fill board vacancies when the last member’s term expired in 2022.
Council subsequently appointed two residents so the board could enter a functional state again. Anyone interested in the third board seat should contact the city.

Employee Wages
Council also voted to affirm and set the administrative staff wages for the 2024 year.
Usually this matter is handled in either late December of the prior year or at the beginning of the year in January.
This year’s delay was blamed on the recent high rate of employee turnover within the city.
