DUBOIS – Sandy Township recently repaired a pair of leaks, Township Manager Shawn Arbaugh reported Monday night.
Work included repairs done to a major leak under West Liberty Road, which released 50,000 gallons of water daily.
The supervisors noted West Sandy Township has experienced a lot of leaks as of late amounting to about 200,000 gallons daily, if occurring simultaneously.
Arbaugh blamed the copper piping from the 90’s in the area where leaks had started to form.
Supervisor Bill Beers thought the piping was much older, dating back to the first installation of hydrants in the area.
He went on to commend the township’s Road Crew for its identification of the leak and completion of its repair.
Beers also added that the township’s leak detection equipment was paying for itself.
The state Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has also offered $160,000 towards the township’s replacement of Breck Road.
The bridge, though currently usable, has partially collapsed. Upon investigation, it was determined that the repair work can be done by the township.
Currently plans are to construct a “squash pipe bridge,” but officials may go with a variety of culvert bridge, if the site isn’t suitable for the pipe-bridge style.
Also, once Sandy Township receives this year’s Community Development Block Grant funds, officials plan to seek proposals to demolish three houses in Sandy Township, which include:
