By District Attorney Ryan Sayers

2023 Vol. 32

Over the last couple weeks, I have discussed different aspects in regards to county detectives and police powers.

This week I am going to answer the question of, “what all law enforcement agencies are in or cover Clearfield County?”

Clearfield County is the third-largest geographic county in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania at a size of approximately 1,144 square miles, and has a population around 80,000.

We have four primary municipalities where a majority of the population resides – Clearfield Borough, DuBois City, Lawrence Township and Sandy Township.

All four of these municipalities are covered by their own full-time police departments.

Clearfield Borough and Lawrence Township recently regionalized their police departments to form the Clearfield Regional Police Department.

DuBois City and Sandy Township are in the process of consolidating the entire governmental structure, which means in the next couple of years those two departments will consolidate as well.

There are a couple part-time police departments in the County too.  Curwensville Borough and Bigler Township have their own departments but do not have 24/7 coverage by municipal law enforcement officers.

For the remainder of the county and for those two municipalities when an officer is not on-duty, the Pennsylvania State Police provide police protection and coverage.

There are three State Police Stations that primarily cover Clearfield County – PSP Clearfield, PSP DuBois and PSP Punxsutawney.

(I say primarily because PSP Rockview also patrols along Clearfield County’s border with Centre County.)

In addition to these departments, we also regularly work with agents from the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office, the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), to name a few.

If you have an emergency, please call 9-1-1.  If you need non-emergency assistance or wish to report suspicious/criminal activity in your area, please contact an officer at the following departments and phone numbers:

  • Bigler Township Regional Police Department – 814-497-4025
  • Clearfield Regional Police Department – 814-765-1647
  • Clearfield County Sheriff’s Office – 814-765-2641, ext. 5015
  • Curwensville Borough Police Department – 814-236-3858
  • DuBois City Police Department – 814-371-2324
  • Pennsylvania State Police Clearfield – 814-857-3800
  • Pennsylvania State Police DuBois – 814-371-4652
  • Pennsylvania State Police Punxsutawney – 814-938-0510
  • Sandy Township Police Department – 814-765-1533
