CURWENSVILLE – The Curwensville Golden Tide high school football team, playing Moshannon Valley for the first in over 20 years, defeated the Black Knights on the Tide’s home turf Friday night 43-20 to move to 5-4 on the 2021 season.

The Tide jumped out to a 15-0 edge after the first 12 minutes of play on two Thad Butler touchdown runs as the senior scampered 57 yards and then 20 yards to pay dirt. Jake Mullins threw a successful two point conversion pass to Ty Terry after the first score. Mullins added the PAT after the second Butler TD.

The Black Knights got right back into the contest to start the second quarter when junior running back Levi Knuth went eight yards for the touchdown with 11:54 to play before halftime. The PAT failed, but it was now Curwensville in front 15-6.

In the middle of the second quarter, at the 5:48 mark, Tide quarterback Danny McGarry threw a 54 yard touchdown strike to Mullins who also tacked on the extra point to push the Curwensville lead to 22-6.

Moshannon Valley wasted little time to cut into the Tide’s lead as Knuth grabbed the kick-off and rambled 90 yards for the quick score with 5:33 before the break. Knuth then ran in the two point conversion attempt to make it 22-14 Curwensville at the half.

The third quarter was owned by McGarry who essentially put the game on ice with three rushing TD’s. The scores came on a 45 yard run, a six yard journey and then with 13 seconds left in the third a one yard dive. Mullins connected on all three PAT’s giving Curwensville a commanding 43-14 spread heading into the final frame.

The Black Knights added the game’s final score when senior running back David Honan ran it in from three yards out with 10:40 left in the backyard battle. The extra point attempt was blocked setting the final at 43-20 in favor of the Golden Tide.

Knuth went over a thousand yards rushing on the year in the game for Moshannon Valley.

Moshannon Valley drops to 2-7 on the season with a final game next Friday on the road at Everett.

The final regular season game for the Golden Tide will be another home one against the Warriors of West Branch next Friday.

Listen to the Curwensville-West Branch game on WOKW-FM, 102.9, starting with the pre-game show at 6:45 pm.
