Moving isn’t necessarily a fun task, which is why we often ask for help. Here’s how you can be helpful to someone else with their moving tasks.

Most of us are well aware of the stress associated with moving to a new home. Just like how we would appreciate help when we need to move, it’s a good idea to offer help when someone you care about wants to move. Moving can be a big burden to shoulder, and kindness often begets kindness, so helping someone move may just strengthen the bond between you. Use some of these tips for helping someone else move to a new place when you want to make a real difference.

Encourage Them To Declutter Before Packing

Packing is always one of the worst parts of moving. The best thing you can do for them is to help them reduce how much they need to pack by decluttering a little. Going through their possessions, you may find out that they don’t actually need or want a lot of what they find. Bagging these items up and tossing them or donating them to a charity like the Purple Heart Pickup can save both of you a lot of future headaches when it comes to unpacking.

Offer Them Some Respite From the Stress

Moving can seem like an all-encompassing task a lot of the time, but all that constant stress can cause people to start making mistakes and bad judgment calls. Sometimes what someone needs is someone else to pull them out of their own head. Invite whoever you’re helping out to get something to eat or just take a break from all the moving stress for a while. They’ll be able to return to it with a clearer head after you are done.

Ask if You Can Assist With Other Concerns

A lot of little things can slip through the cracks when you’re focused on packing and moving. A good tip for helping someone else move to a new place is to offer to take care of some of the other things distracting them from their moving tasks. Watch their kids for a while, pick up food for them, offer to deliver something for them—all of these things can help someone scatterbrained by moving to stay on task.

Round Out What They Need With a Housewarming Gift

Housewarming gifts are always nice to get, but they’re usually more enjoyable when they’re things you actually want or need. If you help them with packing or moving, you can get a pretty good idea of what kind of stuff they own. You can use that information to find a perfect housewarming gift for them that will actually be useful to them in the long run.
