FINDLAY, Ohio — Sophomore 197-pounder Luke McGonigal (Frenchville/Clearfield Area H.S.) finished undefeated in dual meets for Mercyhurst with a 15-0 technical fall over Keigan Yuhas in just 2:57 as the Lakers, ranked No. 11 in NCAA Division II, defeated Findlay 29-10 Saturday.
Earlier in the week, McGonigal registered an impressive 6-1 win over No. 5-ranked Freddie Nixon as one of three Laker victors in a 32-11 loss to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and crosstown rival Gannon, which was ranked No. 21. Nixon had topped him 7-4 at the Midwest Classic in mid-December.
McGonigal, No. 8 in the latest NCAA Division II Coaches Rankings, sports seven falls, two tech falls and two major decisions among his 16 dual meet victories that highlight a 23-5 record he will carry into the Super Region 1 Tournament Feb. 29 which Mercyhurst will host.
The Lakers wound up 4-3 in the PSAC and 11-5 overall.

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Senior 197-pounder Travis Ogden (Clearfield) racked up a technical fall in his first action of the season as Lycoming trimmed host Wesleyan 36-7 in their non-conference finale Saturday.
Ogden, who was 53-19 in his first three campaigns for the Warriors, defeated Pablo Sanchez 21-2 in 6:19.
Lycoming finished 12-5 in dual meets.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
GREENSBURG — Senior Cody Spaid (Bigler/Clearfield Area H.S.) played key roles both nights as Pitt-Greensburg posted a pair of Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference victories last week to reached the 20-win plateau for the first time since the 1999-2000 season.
He pulled down a game-high and season-high 13 rebounds to go with six points, one steal and the team’s only two blocks as the Bobcats prevailed 60-54 over Mount Aloysius at Cresson on Wednesday.
Then, Spaid followed up by filling the stat line Saturday when the Bobcats hiked their record to 20-4 by turning back visiting Alfred (N.Y.) State 79-62.
They are locked into second place in the AMCC at 16-3.
Spaid’s field goal shooting percentage of 62.6 on 114 makes in 182 attempts ranks second in the conference.
He has scored 258 points (10.8 ppg) and leads the Bobcats in rebounds (184) and assists (74). He is second in blocks (28) and also has 22 steals.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
LATROBE — Freshman forward Madi Weber (Grampian/Curwensville Area H.S.) scored nine points and grabbed six rebounds in two wins last week that have Saint Vincent on the verge of claiming the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.
The Bearcats are 13-1 and take a one-game lead over Grove City into the final week of the regular season.
They rolled past visiting Bethany (W.Va.) 89-47 Wednesday and downed host Waynesburg 103-87 Saturday.
In 11 appearances, Weber has 49 points, 19 rebounds, two assists, five steals and four blocks.

MEN’S INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
KENT, Ohio — Slippery Rock freshman Taye Lynch (Clearfield) tripled jumped a season-best 13.46 meters (44 feet, 2 inches) Saturday to place 14th at the Doug Raymond National Qualifier hosted by Kent State.
His previous mark was 13.17 meters (43-2½).

SELINSGROVE — Junior Mason Royer (Clearfield) made his season debut for Pitt-Johnstown at the Susquehanna Invitational Saturday and registered a time of 10.05 seconds for the 60-meter hurdles, placing 23rd.
BASEBALL
MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Sophomore lefthander Bryce Timko (Curwensville) wound up with a no-decision for his start Sunday in the fourth game of Lackawanna’s season-opening series against Patrick Henry Community College.
Timko struck out seven and walked one in four innings of work, allowing five hits and three runs, with two earned. He departed with the score tied 3-3 before the hosts rallied for a 6-4 win.
The Falcons had dropped the first game 5-4. The split Saturday’s twinbill, winning 12-7 after losing 3-2.
Timko also is listed as a first baseman and outfielder on the Lackawanna roster, while freshman Avery Francisco (Curwensville) is shown as a catcher/third baseman/outfielder.
Timko made five appearances with no decisions last year, with four strikeouts, six walks and one hit batsman in 7.1 innings.

BEAUMONT, Texas — Grad student Thomas Summers (Arlington, Va./Clearfield Area H.S.) was hitless in two trips to the plate as the designated hitter in Rhode Island’s opener against Lamar Friday.
The Rams lost that game 7-3 and again 8-2 Saturday before salvaging a 3-2 in the series finale Sunday.
Summers played in 37 games with 33 starts at Maryland-Eastern Shore as a freshman, started 32 games at Indian River (Fla.) State College as a sophomore, didn’t see action at Northern Colorado in 2018 and got into seven games at Southeastern (Fla.) last year.
His career totals include 46 hits with 12 doubles, one triple, four home runs and 19 runs batted in for 225 official at-bats.

HICKORY, N.C. — Freshman infielder/outfielder Eli Glass (Clearfield) was retired in a pinch-hitting role for Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the final game of the Crimson Hawks’ season-opening series against Lenoir-Rhyne.
The hosts swept the Crimson Hawks 5-2 and 12-4 Friday and 5-2 and 14-5 Saturday.
