Why Fiber Optics Should Be Used in Schools

Are you debating if it’s worthwhile upgrading the cabling in your school? Consider fiber optics! We explain why fiber optics should be used in schools.

Fiber optics have been paving the way of innovation in the connectivity industry. They not only increase speed and bandwidth, but considering they’re often buried, they’re more durable and less prone to security issues. Schools throughout the nation need all of those features, so we explore a few reasons why fiber optics should be used in schools.

Speed

Improving technologies, such as 5G and 4K video, force individuals and organizations to change with the improvements. If they were to pass on adjusting, over time they will see decreasing network speed, video quality, load times, and other issues. In addition, video now functions as one of the primary ways to teach students at almost all education levels. Having the appropriate cabling structure is crucial to student success. Fiber optic cabling is the most efficient form of network cables. For example, they enable network speeds much faster than traditional broadband. Many individuals don’t understand fiber optics and their power, but one of the reasons they work so efficiently is because they send data using light.

Security

Another common reason for using fiber optics is the security benefits. Traditional copper wires can be easily cut or intercepted because they emit signals naturally. Fiber optics don’t radiate any signals, and they’re most commonly installed underground and only link to the building through a conduit. The chances of someone cutting or intercepting fiber optic cables drastically decreases due to these factors.

Learning Opportunities

Schools are often considered early adopters in technology, and one of the reasons for this is because they must teach others about innovated technology. Another reason why fiber optics should be used in schools is it offers the opportunity to learn the latest technologies. In addition, if fiber optics get used in higher education, it gives colleges the opportunity to incorporate them into course work and offer new degrees and certifications.

While fiber optics boasts many benefits, skepticism still surround them. However, it’s been connecting cities and countries together for decades. Fiber optics connected France and Great Britain to the United States in 1988. Just let that sink in. Now, think about what fiber optics can do for your school.
