CURWENSVILLE – Sara Curulla will continue to head the Curwensville Borough Council.
At Monday’s biannual reorganizational meeting, the council voted to elect Curulla as president of council and Harriet Carfley will be serving as vice president.
Prior to electing the president and vice president, Mayor John Adams administered the oath of office to returning Councilman Dave Donahue and newly-elected Councilman Keith Simcox.
Returning Council members Harriet Carfley and Tom Carfley took the oath of office earlier.
The council voted to hire the Cummings Law Firm as the borough solicitor as well as to retain Dan Beyer, of the EADS Group as engineer, Eric Elensky, of Walter Hopkins And Company LLP as auditors, and to appoint Mary Ellen Read to the Curwensville Borough Planning Commission.
Curulla said appointments to the borough’s committees will be made at a later date.
During the regular monthly meeting, the council voted to table resolutions regarding the police pension to allow members of council time to review them.
Harriet Carfley announced that the borough has been awarded the ARLE Grant in the amount of $247,277. The grant will be used to upgrade the traffic lights in the borough.
Carfley said the borough will need to take out a loan, because the cost of the lights is to be paid up-front, and borough will be reimbursed through the grant.
She said the borough would only be responsible for “a little less than $7,000.”
Carfley also gave the yearly report for the fire department. She said the department responded to 271 calls. Of those, 109 were in the borough, 27 were for structure fires and 21 were for motor vehicle accidents with injuries.
Adams gave the report for the police department. He said in December, the department conducted seven traffic stops, issued one citation, responded to 43 incidents, served six warrants, made four criminal arrests and assisted other departments seven times.
Code Enforcement Officer Tom Carfley said the Rental Registration Forms have been mailed to the borough’s landlords and the forms are due back to the office by Jan. 31.
Also, at the meeting, the council voted to pay the bills in the amount of $52,524.82.
