HARRISBURG – Senator Wayne Langerholc Jr. (R-35) and Representative Jim Rigby (R-71) Tuesday announced the approval of $2.1 million in state grants to help pay for transportation projects in Cambria and Clearfield counties.

The funding was approved by the Commonwealth Financing Authority through its Multimodal Transportation Fund Program.

“A safe, modern transportation system is key to fostering economic development and promoting thriving communities,” said Langerholc.  “I am pleased that tax dollars are returning to the 35th district to help pay for these important projects.”

“The airport project is a major win for our area, opening the door to new job and economic growth opportunities that are much-needed,” Rigby said.

“I was also pleased to advocate for funding for the Walters Avenue project in Geistown. All of these projects will help strengthen our region.”

The following grants were approved:

Cambria County – $1.4 million

Cambria County will use the funds for hangar improvements and apron repairs at the John Murtha Johnstown-Cambria County Airport.

When the renovations are complete, the hangars will become the operations center for a charter business, a maintenance facility for the charter aircraft and a primary hangar. The total project cost is $2.8 million.

Portage Borough – $298,165

Portage Borough will use the funds for the third phase of sidewalk improvements along Main Street, along the easterly side from Caldwell Avenue south to Mountain Avenue.

Improvements will include new curbs, sidewalks, ADA compliant ramps, decorative brick buffer strips and decorative street lighting. The total project cost is $425,950.

Geistown Borough – $280,000

Geistown Borough will use the funds for road and drainage improvements to Walters Avenue, from Falls Run Road to the borough line just past Barbera Drive.

The 2,000 feet of reconstruction includes two, 10-foot lanes and shoulders for a total roadway width of 24 feet. The project will include extensive drainage improvements, including drains, ditches, inlets and storm pipes. The total cost is $1.1 million.

Ferguson Township – $152,600

Ferguson Township in Clearfield County will use the funds for improvements to 2,425 feet of McGee Road and 1,255 feet of Ross Road, which are deteriorated.

The project includes milling, repaving and installation of road signs and street name signs. The grant covers the total cost of the project.

Multimodal Transportation Fund grants may be used for transportation development, rehabilitation and enhancement projects, including work to improve streetscapes, lighting, sidewalks, pedestrian safety, transportation system connections and transit-oriented development.
