CURWENSVILLE – November is a busy month, but at the beginning of the month, America takes a moment to remember those who made it possible for us to live here with freedom’s not often found elsewhere.

This year, Veterans Day falls on the Monday after Curwensville’s annual Home for the Holidays event. And, so the Curwensville Merchants Association thought this would be a good time for the community to honor local veterans for their service and sacrifice.

Special events for veterans and their families will be held on Saturday, Nov. 9.

At 9 a.m., veterans are invited to the American Legion Post No. 505 on Maxwell Street for a free breakfast. Guests aged 21 years or older may join them for $5. Reservations were needed by Oct. 31, but more information can be found by calling 814-236-3521.

Veterans will receive a card from the Curwensville Merchants Association, which allows them to present the card at any participating business to receive a small token of appreciation, and the cards are good throughout the day.

At 12 p.m., Saturday, Curwensville will welcome Santa Claus to town with the annual Home for the Holidays parade.

This year, instead of asking participants to wear the traditional holiday colors, participants are asked to wear red, white and blue and veterans are asked to participate in the parade and to wear their uniforms or red, white and blue.

Following the parade, a Veterans Appreciation Ceremony will take place at the Doughboy Monument, across the street from the Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home. If the weather is inclement, the ceremony will be moved to the Presbyterian Church.

Veterans are invited to spend the rest of the day in Curwensville enjoying entertainment, special displays, drawings, open houses and sales at participating merchants and civic organizations.
