Campus Corner: AMCC Honors Quadruple Winner Bietz

ERIE — Sophomore Chase Bietz (Clearfield) was named Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Swimmer of the Week Monday for a four-win performance that highlighted Penn State Behrend’s first victory over Westminster Saturday.

The Lions (2-0) defeated the Titans 187-109.

Bietz touched first in the 100-yard breaststroke (58.38 seconds), 200 breaststroke (2:13.32) and 200 individual medley (2:02.72). He turned in a 26.94 breaststroke split for the 200 medley relay team that was victorious in 1:38.25.

His times in the two breaststroke races were season-bests.

Bietz owns five wins in individual events and three in relays in the Lions’ three outings.

ERIE — Juniors Hayden Steiner (Clearfield) and Tate Swanson (Clearfield) earned points for Clarion (1-1) in a 131-74 loss to host Gannon Friday.

Steiner placed fourth in the 100-yard butterfly in a personal-record 55.86 seconds, while Swanson finished fifth in the 50 freestyle in a season-best 23.21 and led off for the 200 freestyle relay foursome tat took second in 1:32.09.

Steiner swam the fly leg for the Golden Eagle ‘B’ 200 medley quartet that finished fourth in 1:43.10 and the leadoff leg for the ‘B’ 200 freestyle team that was fifth in 1:35.37.

Swanson touched fifth in the 100 freestyle in 51.51, a new season mark.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

GREENSBURG — Sophomore goalkeeper Madi Jones (Clearfield) saw her scoreless streak of more than 489 minutes short-circuited by a Pitt-Greensburg goal in the 25th minute, and the undefeated Bobcats went on to snap Penn State Behrend’s seven-game winning streak, 2-0, Saturday to clinch the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference regular season title.

Jones made five saves for the second-place Lions, who dipped to 7-1-1 in the AMCC and 8-6-2 overall. The Bobcats are 16-0 with nine conference victories.

In her 12 starts, Jones has a 1.01 goals-against average with 28 saves in 1,007 minutes. She sports an 8-2-2 record.

INDIANA — Freshman Alayna Ryan (Clearfield) earned the assist when Mahogany Willis turned her pass into the winning goal via a run through the Slippery Rock defense in the 48th minute as Indiana University of Pennsylvania knocked off the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division front-runners 2-1 Saturday.

The Crimson Hawks, who shut out host Gannon last Wednesday, have won five of their last six PSAC-West games and sit in third place with 21 points on a 7-5 record. They are 9-5 overall.

Slippery Rock had checked into the game with an 11-1 conference record.

Ryan is IUP’s No. 2 scorer with 10 points on three goals, two of them game-winners, and four assists.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

BLOOMSBURG — Gannon freshman Jeremiah Vezza (Clearfield) ran the 8,000-meter Bloomsburg course in 30:06.2 at the 2019 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships Saturday morning.

He was the 119th finisher among 139 starters from 15 teams.

Joseph Westrick became Gannon’s first PSAC cross-country champion with a time of 25:20.3, pacing the Golden Knights to a ninth-place finish with 188 points.

FOOTBALL

BLOOMSBURG — Senior linebacker Christian Rumery (Clearfield) and the Lock Haven defense had a tough afternoon Saturday as Bloomsburg bolted to a 38-0 halftime lead and went on to win the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division game 54-27 in front of 2,643 fans in Redman Stadium.

The Bald Eagles fell to 1-7 with a 0-5 PSAC-East record.

Rumery has registered two solo tackles and four assists.
