CLEARFIELD – A Veterans Expo & Career Fair will be held Oct. 22 at the Expo I Building at the Clearfield Driving Park.
The third annual event will take place from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., and is being held in partnership with CareerLink, announced Veterans Affairs Director Betina Nicklas at Tuesday’s county commissioners’ meeting.
Although it’s an expo and career fair geared towards the county’s veterans, Nicklas said it’s open to everyone. She emphasized that: “We will not turn anyone away, and encourage everyone to attend.”
The event will feature at least 50 vendors, she said, including Helmets to Hardhats from Philadelphia, Pa. This program is designed to help military service members successfully transition back into civilian life by offering them the means to secure a quality career in the construction industry.
Nicklas said there will be prospective employers, educational institutions and service providers. The Department of Veterans Affairs will be on-hand with its employment coordinator, and will also have information on its suicide prevention and MyHealtheVet programs.
As with past years, a flu shot clinic will be held during the event. However, Nicklas noted that because the flu shots are being made available through the VA, this free clinic is only open to veterans.

Also, on Tuesday the commissioners proclaimed the month of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month at the request of Tammy Kyler of the Community Action Inc. Crossroads Project.
Kyler reported that the county’s domestic violence statistics have increased slightly from last year with 877 new domestic violence victims. In addition, she said the program provided 2,778 counseling hours and 1,303 shelter nights.
She said the program saw 36 new adults and children in its shelters. The Community Action Crossroads Project currently has shelter locations in DuBois and Punxsutawney, Kyler said, noting Clearfield County victims can be placed in either shelter pending availability.
In other business, the commissioners:
- executed lease, facilities use and code of conduct agreements with the Treasure Lake Church, the new Treasure Lake polling place. The county’s Board of Election previously voted to move the polling location from the North Point Fire Station to the church.
- approved an agreement with Rapid Financial Solutions for the commissary accounts at the Clearfield County Jail.
- approved an Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) Field Experience agreement for the Clearfield County Probation Department.
- approved the bills as presented by the Controller’s office.
