CLEARFIELD – At the beginning of Tuesday’s Lawrence Township Supervisors meeting, the question was raised about what has been happening with Crown Crest Cemetery.

Solicitor James Naddeo said he had a small update. Naddeo said that attorney Peter Smith had intended to spearhead formation of a non-profit to eventually take over operation of the cemetery. However, recently Smith informed Naddeo that he would not be able to do so.

Meanwhile, Naddeo said a special hearing is being scheduled regarding the cemetery status, but a date has not been set.

Naddeo expects that the judge will appoint a receiver for the cemetery. The receiver would then be in charge until a permanent solution is arrived at.

The tax office is also working on a judicial sale, but Naddeo noted that it won’t do any good if there isn’t a bidder for the cemetery. He said they need someone to step forward and create a 501(c)3 non-profit and bid on the cemetery when the judicial sale is held.

“We’re doing what we can with it,” Naddeo said.

Supervisor Randy Powell added that they need volunteers to come forward and help with upkeep at the cemetery. When the township first put out a call for volunteers, they had lots of help, but now only a small handful have been doing the work.

Later in the meeting, the board approved filling out an application to request help from the inmates at Quehanna Boot Camp.

Normally the schedule is filled up for the inmates, but there are times when they need a day or two of work and the supervisors hope to be able to get them once a month or so.
