CLEARFIELD – Four new, part-time police officers will be officially hired by Clearfield Borough next week.
During Thursday’s council meeting, the personnel committee approved the recommendation of hiring Dylan Kahley, Bryce Greene, Torin Martin and Derek Reed.
Assistant Police Chief Nathan Curry gave a report on recent activities by the department and noted that the four candidates have been going on ride-alongs with officers and becoming oriented to the department.
Curry also reported the department has been receiving numerous calls regarding used syringes being found in yards, on streets, in parking lots and other places.
He asked residents to be vigilant and if they see a used syringe, they should call police to dispose of it and not touch it themselves.
The Clearfield Borough Police Department is the official collection agency for unused prescription drugs in the county.
Curry reported that 147 pounds of prescription drugs were picked up by the National Guard from the drop-off locations, which are located at Lawrence Township’s and Clearfield’s departments as well as the county courthouse.
Another issue has been police courtesy checks on businesses. Curry explained officers at night will check the doors of local businesses, and many of them are unlocked and often officers cannot get hold of anyone to come and secure the businesses.
Curry stressed the importance of business owners coming to the police department and filling out a form that gives officers information on whom to contact if a business is found unsecured at night.
Borough Operations Manager Leslie Stott suggested the borough could also talk with Loretta Wagner of the Clearfield Revitalization Corp. to help spread the word.
Stott also reminded residents that the borough has ordinances regarding grass and garbage. The grass ordinance allows for grass to be no higher than six inches, and grass cannot be blown onto the streets because it clogs the stormwater drains.
The garbage ordinance dictates all residents must have garbage pick-up service.
