DUBOIS – DuBois City Council plans to take measures to give its police officers the authority to ban individuals caught fighting in city recreation areas.

On Monday night, Police Chief Blaine Clark reported that kids are recording fights that have occurred throughout the city, and then are posting the videos to social media.

He said it appears the kids are using gloves commonly worn for mixed martial arts. Some videos, Clark said, show kids being knocked out.

When the fighting problem first arose, he said the officer wasn’t sure how to handle it. So, he kicked those involved in the fighting out the park for trespassing.

Solicitor Toni Cherry and Clark proceeded to discuss the addition of fighting to the list of prohibited activities in the city recreation areas.

Cherry said Clark could add fighting if he chose to, but he shouldn’t have to. He also said he’d explore other legal avenues for dealing with this type of fighting behavior.

In other business, council voted to award the water plant’s gravity filter project to Unifilt Corp.  The bid came in at $121,300, and was the lowest of two bids.

It was announced that the DuBois Historical Society will unveil a boulevard sign Thursday, June 27 at 6 p.m.  The sign will celebrate the anniversary of Liberty Boulevard.
