One of Clearfield County’s most serene and historic spots is the McGees Mills Covered Bridge, in Bell Township, near Mahaffey.
The bridge was erected in 1873. The interior arches and trusses, that support the bridge span across the upper, and narrow, part of the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, are samplings of the thick white pine beams and boards once produced by the county’s dominant logging and rafting industry.
It is a fine tribute to old-fashioned craftsmanship and a must-see for locals and visitors alike.
The roof collapsed as a result of a heavy snowstorm in 1993 but has been repaired and reinforced. The bridge has been added to the National Register of Historic Places.
The photo shows a modern portrait of the landmark bridge, but, if color filming had existed nearly a century and a half ago, the same photo could have been taken then.
