BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — Senior kicker/punter Spencer Herrington (Clearfield) of Worcester Polytechnic Institute was honored by D3football.com for the second year in a row with a berth on the 2018 All-East Third Team.
He was selected to the All-East First Team last year.
Herrington, only the second Engineer to be cited by D3football.com, finished his outstanding WPI career by making all 30 extra point tries and 12 of 15 field goal attempts, including a career-long 42-yarder, for 66 points.
He led the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference in all three categories and was named NEWMAC Special Teams Athlete of the Year for the second time as a repeat NEWMAC First Team selection.
Herrington also average 35 yards for 53 punts, two of them being 55-yarders.

WRESTLING

KUTZTOWN — Lock Haven freshman Luke McGonigal (Clearfield) bested No. 1 seed Dylan Reynolds of Edinboro and two other opponents to claim the 197-pound title at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships in Kutztown University’s Keystone Arena Saturday.
Clarion redshirt freshman Shae Bloom (Curwensville) placed fourth in the same bracket.
Both of the former schoolboy standouts have bumped up a weight to make their respective lineups.
McGonigal (7-4) opened with a 16-3 major decision over Alex Castro of Shippensburg before nipping Reynolds 2-1 in the semifinals.
He followed that up with a solid 7-3 win over Colton Dull of Millersville in the title match.
Bloom (12-4) advanced to the semifinals with a 10-1 major decision over Mike Geyer of Pitt-Johnstown and, after losing 5-1 to Dull, defeated Bloomsburg’s Kyle Murphy 6-4 to reach the consolation final, where he lost 7-3 to Reynolds.
Bloom was coming off a third-place finish in the annual Lake Erie College Storm Open at Painesville, Ohio.
In that 17-team tourney, he was beaten 11-5 by Stanley Smeltzer of Virginia Tech but rebounded to decision Ohio University’s Blake Wilson 8-2 and Jake Walker 7-5 before winning by medical forfeit over Golden Eagle teammate Luke Funck in the consy final.

GREENVILLE — Junior 197-pounder Travis Ogden (Clearfield) edged nationally-ranked Gage Gladysz 5-4 in Lycoming’s 39-6 victory over host Thiel Friday.
Gladysz was on the honorable mention list of d3wrestle.com’s rankings last week after opening the season at No. 9.
Ogden is 3-0 in duals and 7-1 overall for the Warriors, who also defeated Penn State Behrend 42-8 Friday for a 4-2 record.

MEN’S SWIMMING
FREDONIA, N.Y. — Freshman Chase Bietz (Clearfield) was named Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Men’s Swimmer of the Week after breaking three Penn State Behrend records, meeting two NCAA Division III “B” cut times and lowering one AMCC mark during the Blue Devil Invitational hosted by Fredonia State Friday through Sunday.
He set personal bests with NCAA qualifying times of 56.10 seconds for the 100-yard breaststroke and 2:04.23 for the 200 breaststroke. The latter also is a new AMCC standard.

His other school record was a 1:53.87 in the 200 individual medley race that he won by nearly two seconds.
He’s touched first in all but one of his 12 individual events.
Bietz, who turned in a 21.16 anchor leg, teamed up with Mark Patterson, Quinn Fischer and Nathan Wagner for a 1:26.18 that broke the Steel Hall Natatorium record for the 400 medley relay.
He swam splits for three other victorious Lion relay foursomes to make it a perfect weekend.
He had a 58.15 breaststroke leg for the 400 medley quartet that posted a :31.11, a 46.34 second split for the 400 free team that was clocked in 3:08.62 and a 1:44.57 second split for the 800 free foursome that was timed in 7:03.23.
With 1,043.5 points, Penn State Behrend left the other four teams far behind.

INDIANA — Sophomores Hayden Steiner (Clearfield) and Tate Swanson (Clearfield) picked up points for Clarion in a 176-85 loss to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Indiana University of Pennsylvania Friday.
Steiner placed fourth in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:09.56 and fifth in both the 100 fly in 58.48 and his first 400 individual medley race in 4:45.96.
Swanson finished fifth in the 50 free in 23.38 and 100 free in 51.05 and sixth in the 200 free in 1:53.43. He also touched the wall third with a 22.03 anchor leg for the Crimson Hawk ‘A’ 200 medley team that was clocked in 1:43.43.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING
INDIANA — Freshman Paige Mikesell (Clearfield) was a doublewinner and junior Claire Mikesell (Clearfield) also was victorious as undefeated Indiana University of Pennsylvania breezed past Clarion 159-103 Friday.
Paige Mikesell touched the Pigeon Natatorium wall first in the 100-yard freestyle in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying time of 54.35 seconds and the 100 butterfly in 58.17.
She also was a member of two Crimson Hawk relay teams that finished second, posting a 22.03 anchor leg for the ‘A’ 200 medley foursome that had a 1:51.01 clocking and a 24.73 third split for the ‘B’ 200 free quartet that was timed in 1:41.21.
Claire Mikesell won the 50 free in 25.23, which bettered the PSAC qualifying standard, and placed fourth in the 100 free in 56.41.
Her 24.89 anchor leg helped the ‘A’ 200 free relay team finish third in 1:41.29, and she was on the ‘B’ 200 medley foursome that wound up third in 1:51.95.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
BRADFORD — Junior starter Cody Spaid (Clearfield) scored a career-high 18 points, shared team honors with six rebounds and had four assists for Pitt-Greensburg in a tough 87-82 double-overtime loss to Pitt-Bradford Saturday.
Earlier in the week, he recorded eight points, two rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks when the Bobcats were defeated 85-80 by visiting La Roche.
The pair of Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference setbacks dropped the Bobcats to 3-6.
Spaid leads the team in rebounds (58), assists (23) and blocks (14). He has accumulated 75 points (8.3 ppg) and made six steals.

DUBOIS — Freshman guard Josh Terry (Curwensville) made his debut for Penn State DuBois with 10 points, six rebounds, four steals and one block in losses to Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference West Division rivals Penn State Fayette, 88-66, and Penn State New Kensington, 98-89, last week.
Junior center Bernard Rauckhorst (Curwensville) had five points, three rebounds and two blocks at PS Fayette and one rebound and one assist in the ensuing home game.
In nine games with one start, Rauckhorst has logged 33 points, 26 rebounds, four assists, two steals and three blocks.
The Lions have lost all five PSUAC games after going 3-1 in non-conference action.
