WRESTLING
CLARION — Sophomore 184-pounder Shae Bloom (Grampian/Curwensville Area H.S.) debuted for Clarion with a solid performance, 6-1 with four pins, to place fourth at a weight with 20 entries in the Clarion Open at the Student Recreation Center Saturday.
The Golden Eagles accumulated 135 points to claim the title in the season-opening tourney that attracted wrestlers, many competing unattached, from 16 colleges.
After pinning Shane Mast of Kent State at 3:44, Bloom came on the short end of an 8-7 final against eventual runner-up Terry Allard of Bloomsburg.
He came roaring back in the consolations, beating Chris Morrow of Cleveland State 9-5 and decking Dalton Group of Pitt-Johnstown at 1:00, Matt McGillick of Pitt at 1:02 and Tim Wallace of Kent State in just 22 seconds around a medical forfeit win over Cameron Caldarelli of Buffalo.
Clarion sophomore Ty Bagoly was awarded a medical over redshirt freshman Bloom in the third-place match.
They had highlighted the annual Golden Eagle Blue/Gold Dual that decided the starting lineup by splitting two thrillers.
Having lost 7-3 to Bagoly earlier in the week, Bloom forced a deciding bout by registering a pin with just three seconds remaining in the opening bout Oct. 26.
In the rubber match later, Bloom had the first-string spot in his grasp at 7-2 late in the third before Bagoly rallied for a takedown and four-point near fall to prevail 9-7, the closest of the eight bouts that punctuated the preseason wrestleoffs.
